Mount Edgecombe Country Club

Development on the Natal Estates Sports Club began in 1924 with the creation of an 18-hole course with limited membership. In 1946, a more substantial clubhouse was opened and membership extended to include ‘town’ members. The subsequent years were to mark a historical and trying period during which a fire that reduced the magnificent clubhouse to a mass of rubble and the course sustained severe flood damage. From this heartbreaking ruin arose the highly acclaimed Mount Edgecombe Country Club.

In 1988, the magnificent clubhouse was rebuilt and the second 18-hole course developed by Moreland Developments.

Over the years, the Club has hosted many high profile and important golfing events including the Mount Edgecombe Trophy - a PGA event, the Natal and South African Ladies Championship and more recently the SA Amateur Championship, another landmark in the history and development of one of South Africa’s most popular, picturesque and testing golf courses.

Plans for a second course were hatched in 1994. Dayson, De Villiers and Van der Merwe were commissioned to design the championship course directly south of the existing course on Estate 1. Various topographical features - undulating hills with isolated indigenous bush, a stream running from East to West, the Pani Dam and two sensitive wetlands - were taken into account when the development began.

The design philosophy adopted by the golf course architects was the construction of a course that is challenging, but fair – where a serious golfer could test his skills but an occasional golfer could enjoy the game.

Mount Edgecombe is now the only permanent residential estate in South Africa to offer a 36-hole golf facility where both 18-hole courses are of championship standard.

The two estates now boast a visually pleasing ambience that is reminiscent of a bygone era. Estate residents are automatically members of the prestigious Mount Edgecombe Country Club and are encouraged to make full use if its facilities. Aside from the two 18-hole golf courses, facilities include tennis and squash courts, bowling greens, swimming pools and a 7km golf cart path, which is also used for jogging, walking and cycling.

In addition to the main clubhouse, a second clubhouse has been built overlooking the Pani Dam, where members can relax and enjoy the sweeping velvet green vistas of the golf course. Environmental aspects have also been catered for. Feeding, nesting and breeding facilities have been created for the wide range of endemic bird species found on the Estate. Great care has also been taken to preserve the existing wetlands, marshlands and grasslands.

The complete lifestyle offered is convenient, comfortable, safe, secure and stress free…this is what you will experience at Mount Edgecombe Country Club Estate - one of Kwa-Zulu Natal’s best-kept secrets!
